Escaldes - Engordany

The nerve centre of Andorran commerce consists of Avinguda Meritxell and Avinguda Carlemany, a single artery with two names, the first for the part in Andorra la Vella and the second for the part in Escaldes. Until 1978 Escaldes-Engordany and Andorra la Vella were a single parish but constant population growth and the desires of its inhabitants led to it being split up into the two centres.

Sant Julià de Lòria

The visitor entering Andorra across the Spanish frontier makes first contact with the Principality in the parish of Sant Julià de Lòria. Large supermarkets, an abundance of petrol stations, but Sant Julià also offers art lovers a great number of churches and small chapels.

Historically this parish was the centre of the tobacco industry, one of the most important in the country, and it consists of the centres of Sant Julià de Lòria, Bixessarri, Aixovall, Certers, Llumeneres, Nagol, Aixirivall, Aubinyà, Juberri and Fontaneda.

Andorra La Vella

Andorra la Vella is the most populated parish - the Principality is divided into seven constituencies called "parishes" - and its centre is at the same time the capital of the country. So it is the parish where the institutional and administrative buildings are to be found.

La Massana

This parish contains the highest point in Andorra, the peak of Comapedrosa at an altitude of 2942 metres. One should also note its wealth of rivers since it is crossed by the Northern Valira, the rivers of Arinsal, Pal and Montaner, and numerous tributaries and streams. Its wealth of mineral waters is considerable.

Ordino

Sornàs, Ansalonga, La Cortinada, Llorts and Ordino, five "quarts" or villages, make up the parish. Ordino is the opposite extreme to the hectic pace of Andorra la Vella or Escaldes. It is a fortress of peace. Farming is more in evidence than commercial offers or hotel complexes and it has maintained, intact we feel, its air of a gentlemanly retreat.

Wellspring of Culture: Caldea

Even as far back as the last century, the hot spa waters of this area captured the interest of a number of foreign companies who wanted to create a spa and recreational centre geared towards a tourism for the elite.

Sky in Andorra - The Fascinating Story

The abundant snowfalls of 1924 would have delighted skiers in the 90s but the snow which lavishly covered the country was of no benefit to the less than numerous inhabitants of the Principality of Andorra who were suffering severe difficulties in getting from one village to the next. Despite this, the mail service had to go on and that year Miquel Farré, the postman at Soldeu, during one of his habitual journeys on snow shoes to the French village of Porta to fetch the mail discovered the long ash wood planks which his French colleagues were using to get about.
